During the course of our sales we have been asked about the difference between an estate sale and a tag sale. Please allow us to give a brief description of each for clarification.

What is an estate sale?

They are usually in your local newspapers or county shoppers, estate sales will be listed in the classifieds under garage sales, tag sale, or estate sale, the ads will usually list the company’s contact information. Sales will be hosted by family, friends but most will be hosted by an Estate Sale company that is made up of professionals with extensive backgrounds in antiques, appraisals, and estate liquidations. Some companies will do early sales prior to the actual published start of the sale. It all depends on the company and the contracts with their clients.

Normally, estate sale ads will have a numbering system which is available per a sign-up sheet. The sign-up sheet will be typically available about 1 to 2 hours prior to the start of the sale. Numbers are only given the first morning for the first couple of hours. This is to keep the influx of people at a minimum for safety and obviously theft. All items are priced and haggling or negotiation is not part of the process.

Usually, the first day is full price, afternoon of the second day is 25% off, and the last day is 50% off.

Most sales will also take offers on items. Methods of payments would be cash, personal cheques and sometimes credit/debit cards if the company is set-up for it.

What is a tag sale?

A tag sale is also known as a yard sale, rummage sale, attic sale, moving sale, is an informal, irregularly scheduled event for the sale of used goods by private individuals, in which "block sales" are allowed, so that sellers are not required to obtain business licenses or collect sales tax. Typically the goods in a garage sale are unwanted items from the household with the home owners conducting the sale. The goods are sometimes new, like-new, or just usable, offered for sale because the owner does not want or need the item, to minimize their possessions, or to raise funds. The sales venue is typically a garage, driveway, front yard or porch. Bargaining also known as haggling on prices is routine, and items may or may not have price labels affixed. Some people buy goods from these sales to restore them for resale.
